Between craving and relapse...

...there occurs an obscure mental twist where the addict or alcoholic begins to justify the use or abuse of alcohol or drugs under the assumption that he or she can use them like other people. Of course he cannot, and knows it, but the brain of the addict, smokers included, is physiologically dependent upon chemistry it can only achieve with the reward it has come to expect.

The brain, for instance, calls for nicotine every eight seconds, and the alcoholic tends to crave liquor well into sobriety about as often as he or she consumed alcohol. In many cases, alcoholics must go through a period of withdrawal where the body flushes the alcohol from their system, leaving them susceptible to violent tremors, even siezures. While alcoholic withdrawal is the only withdrawal which can actually kill you, other drugs behave in the same way.

The problem with alcohol and drug addiction is that well after the individual has gotten clean or sober, the brain still expects the hit, and will go to any lengths to recreate the effects of that particular substance. This means inundating the individual with false indicators that it is perfectly acceptable to engager in the behavior that created the dependency upon the hit to begin with.

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers can help. Contact your local hospital if you feel you may have a problem with alcohol or drugs. Facilities dedicated to recovery can afford you a host of coping mechanisms to help you combat your cravings. Your local hospital should also have information about tobacco cessation programs in your area, through which you may receive free nicotine replacement therapy products and ways to help you fight the urge to light up.
